Reporting to the Chief Engineer, executes and/or directs projects to create designs for mechanisms and/or machines to meet customer requirements, or improve the performance or profitability of existing machine designs. Works toward completion of project on schedule, and the profitability goals are met. Interacts with customers, sales representatives and distributors to maximize the accuracy of information exchanged. Creates conceptual and design layouts. Performs calculations to validate concepts. Working from these layouts and calculation or from layouts created by others, designs finished piece parts. Creates and/or modifies finished detail machining drawings and machine assembly drawings. Selects and/or specifies purchased parts to be used in the manufacture of the machine. Creates and/or modifies Bills of Material to document the assembly. May direct the activities of others working in support functions. Design and drawing work are done in CAD and SolidWorks, unless otherwise directed. Design layouts, drawings and Bills of Materials will be created in accordance with applicable company Standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
• Designs, or directs the design of, mechanical assemblies and piece parts which function as required to meet customer needs, and which can be manufactured and assembled economically.
• Meets with, or corresponds with, customers, sales representatives, distributors, etc., to ensure that the needs and expectations of the customer are fully understood and documented.
• Interacts with company vendors and third party vendors to assure proper performance of equipment obtained for the customer as part of a customer installation.
• Creates design layouts which meet company Standards, which are accurate, and which are completed enough to be understood by designers and/or engineers for reference.
• Performs calculations as required to validate design decisions. Makes notes or keeps copies of calculations and reference documents which are used as the basis for design decisions.
• Creates detail machine drawings, as required, which meet company Standards, are complete and can be read and understood by a machinist.
• Prepares and distributes drawing packages, Bills of Material and other information as will be required for manufacture and assembly of parts to build finished machinery.
• Creates assembly machine drawings which meet company Standards, are complete, and can be read and understood by Mechanical Assembly personnel, and may be used by customers for parts identification purposes.
• Monitors progress of mechanical designers and/or drafters assigned to his project.
• Insures that machines and components are safe and/or safely guarded.
• Participates in customer meetings to discuss technical issues. Works with Sales to schedule final inspection visits, so all interested parties are included.
• Implements customer "punch list" items, if needed. Works with sales to clarify commercial issues.
• Requests and/or reviews product samples or product descriptions. Coordinates with sales to obtain samples on a timely basis.
• Works with the Documentation Department to ensure accuracy of Maintenance manuals.
• Provides support and assistance to the departments of company as required to ensure the timely completion, profitability and proper operation of machinery being built.
• Provides support and assistance to the Technical Service Department as needed. Possible travel to visit customer plants may be required. | | Job Requirements | EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering with 5 years experience in a manufacturing environment, or equivalent related experience and proven judgement in Mechanical Design, and proven ability to direct the work of others.
• Ability to handle larger more complex jobs that a Project Engineer and proven ability to work diplomatically with customers.
• Minimum 5 years experience designing automated equipment from concept to completion.
SKILLS
• Proficient in the use CAD system and Solidworks.
• Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Proficiency in the application and use of mechanical components such as bearings, bushings, sprockets, gears, cams, etc. Also familiar with electromechanical devices such as servo-motor, electrocams, etc.
• Proficiency in advanced electrical control concepts and capabilities, and the requirements of system control.
• Ability to perform analytical calculations to evaluate design concepts, including stress/strain, torque, acceleration, drive ratios, etc. Ability to evaluate system operations, including production rates for machine processes, and ability to recognize potential problems from customer product configurations.
• Familiarity with basic machining practices, as they affect the design, configuration, and cost of manufactured machine piece parts.
• Knowledgeable in the use of Windows applications, primarily File Manager and Print Manager, as well as other applications programs.
• Capability of reading and creating standard 3-view orthogonal projection drawings, with auxiliary views and sections as needed.
• Familiarity with standard drafting practices, including dimensioning, tolerancing, and ordinate dimensioning.
